In Clovis Unified we are devoted to giving students a wide variety of experiences in academics, athletics and the arts. Upper grade students can choose to try out for the annual school play. Experiences in elementary school productions often lead students to continue participation in the arts into their junior high and high school years.

Toby Tyler or Ten weeks with a circus by Tim Kelly
Toby Tyler follows the story of a young boy who is unhappy at home and joins the circus. The following events form lasting friendships and uncover a plan to sabotage the circus.
Parent/Student Informational Meeting: November 20th 5:30pm
Drama 101: Dec 2, 4, 9, 11 & 16th. Mondays 3:45-5 and Wednesdays 1:10-3:30
Auditions: Wednesday Dec 18th in the MPR
Callbacks: Thursday Dec 19th 3:45-5pm
Rehearsals: January 8th MPR Wednesdays 1:10-3:30 pm & Library Mondays 3:45-5pm
Performances: School performances March 24th & 25th, Public performance March 26th 6pm
Attendance: No more than 2 unexcused absences allowed. Please include ALL conflicts on the audition form.
ALL students must be at Dress Rehearsals March 12,17 & 19th and all 3 performances. No exceptions.

Cast (18+)
Toby Tyler (123 lines) – Boy, about 10. Good kid, Big Voice
Mister Job (106 lines) – runs the refreshment stand, not trustworthy, fast talker
Olga (68 lines) – Gypsy fortune teller, not very nice
Pretzel the Clown (Doesn’t Talk) – Mischievous, magical, pantomimes all interactions.
Mrs. Jones (44 lines) – Circus Owner (Double cast) Nice, confident, proud owner
Lenita (20lines) – Mrs. Jones unpleasant twin sister.(double cast) cruel, scheming
Madam Spelletti (44 lines) – Snake charmer, caring, mysterious
Lily (38 lines) – Bearded lady, obviously fake beard, kind, friendly, talks a lot, maybe southern accent
Ella (37 lines) – A young horseback rider “Mademoiselle Jeanette”. Friendly, dancer, majestic, age match to Toby,
Ben (24lines) – Circus Ringmaster, hard worker, big voice, leader
Samuel (21 lines) – “Living Skeleton” who is gaining weight. Calm, kind, caring,
Sheriff (14 lines) – Lawman, straight forward, by the book cop.
Aunt Olive (12 lines) – Tobys Aunt, stern but caring
Zoltan (9 lines) – Strong Man, strong silent type
Circus Go’ers (1-3 lines) – 4-8 patrons and children; interact with performers
Circus acts (0 lines) – variety of circus performers (Patrons can double cast)
Additional Clowns (0 lines) Interact with audience and perform a variety of tricks. Auditions will include tricks and talents.
Crew positions (16+)
Student Director (Busier during rehearsals) possibly chosen before auditions.
Leading warmups, calls actors to stage for scenes, runs scenes off stage.
Stage manager (Busier during shows) possibly chosen
before auditions.
Runs the show backstage, calls places, double checks all other departments.
Lighting technician
Lighting cues, house and backstage lighting
Sound technician
Sound cues, microphones, music
House crew (4)
Audience set up, “reserved seats” marking. Donations, passing out programs.
Backstage crew (2)
Set changes, any sound or visual effects from offstage, curtains.
Prop master and prop crew (1+2)
Acquires or creates all needed props. Checks props in and out to actors. Responsible for prop inventory
Set / stage crew (4)
Backgrounds set pieces and set furniture, painting, building.
