1st Grade Sight Words Here! Very important
Ways to Support Reading at Home
Decoding:
- Practice reading decodable books or short passages that match your child’s reading level.
- Encourage your child to “stretch” and blend sounds, look for word chunks (such as word families), and reread tricky words.
- When your child gets stuck, prompt them to try the word first before helping.
Fluency:
- Have your child reread familiar books multiple times to build smoothness and expression.
- Read together—model fluent reading and then have your child echo or read the same page.
- Celebrate effort and improvement, not just accuracy.
Comprehension:
- Ask simple questions after reading, such as: Who was the story about? What happened first? What was your favorite part?
- Encourage your child to retell the story in their own words.
- Talk about pictures and connect the story to your child’s own experiences.
